Learn why your yoga bolster flattens over time and how to restore its support. This guide covers common causes and practical fixes.
Quick answer
Your yoga bolster loses shape most often because the fill compresses from repeated use and moisture. You can restore it by fluffing, airing, or replacing the fill, depending on the type.
Why bolsters flatten
Bolsters with cotton or foam fill compress under body weight over time. Cotton batting packs down, especially if you use the bolster daily for restorative poses. Moisture from sweat or humid studios speeds up the breakdown, making the fill lumpy or flat.
A bolster that loses shape no longer provides even support, which can lead to discomfort in poses like supported backbends or forward folds. Recognizing the cause helps you choose the right fix.
Diagnosis
- Symptom: Your bolster feels softer in the middle, looks uneven, or no longer lifts you as high. Check for visible sagging or a dip at the center.
- Likely cause: Cotton fill compresses from weight and humidity. Foam cores rarely flatten but may degrade if stored in heat. If you have a foam core, the issue is likely cover wear, not fill.
- Corrective action: For cotton-filled bolsters: remove the cover (if washable) and fluff the fill by hand or in a dryer on low heat with dryer balls. For foam cores: replace the cover if it's worn or the foam is crumbling. If fluffing doesn't help, the fill may need replacement. Stop if the fill is crumbling or moldy—replace the bolster instead.
